Safety at Play to Learn

Safe. Known. Valued. Protected.

At Play to Learn, safety is not simply a policy, procedure or compliance requirement. It is a responsibility we carry every day.

For more than 20 years, families have trusted us with what matters most: their children.

We believe every child has the right to feel safe, known, valued and understood. This means protecting their physical safety while also creating environments where children feel emotionally secure, respected, listened to and confident that the adults around them will act in their best interests.

Our approach to safety is proactive, transparent and continually evolving.

Our Commitment to Child Safety

The safety, wellbeing and protection of children are at the centre of our decision-making.

Across Play to Learn, we are committed to creating environments where:

  • children are treated with dignity and respect
  • children feel confident expressing their needs, feelings and concerns
  • educators understand their responsibility to protect children
  • professional boundaries and expectations are clear
  • concerns are taken seriously and responded to appropriately
  • families are communicated with openly
  • risks are identified, assessed and actively managed
  • safety practices are continually reviewed and strengthened

Child safety belongs to everyone.

From our Approved Provider and senior leadership team to our Centre Directors, educators, support teams and families, we believe strong safeguarding cultures are created through shared responsibility and accountability.

Safety Begins With Our People

Policies are important, but children experience safety through people.

That is why we place significant emphasis on the professional expectations, education and ongoing development of our team.

Our educators and leaders receive ongoing guidance and training relating to child safety, mandatory reporting responsibilities, professional conduct, supervision, risk management and their responsibilities when working with children.

We maintain clear expectations around professional behaviour and accountability and continue to strengthen our practices as regulations, research and sector expectations evolve.

Our leaders also work alongside educators to translate policies into everyday practice.

We want every member of our team to understand not only what is expected of them, but why it matters.

Physical Safety & Supervision

Children deserve environments where they can explore, investigate, take developmentally appropriate risks and learn while being carefully protected.

Our safety practices include considered supervision, regular risk assessment, safe arrival and departure procedures, secure access practices, environmental checks and clear operational procedures.

Our teams continually consider questions such as:

What experiences are our children engaging in?

What risks are present?

How are educators positioned?

What could change in this environment?

This active approach to supervision means safety is not treated as a checklist completed at the beginning of the day. It is an ongoing professional responsibility.

Secure Environments

We take the security of our centres seriously.

Our approach includes controlled access to our services, security and monitoring systems, procedures around entry and departure, and processes designed to ensure that access to our environments is appropriately managed.

Following previous security incidents that occurred outside operating hours, Play to Learn further strengthened its security measures across affected operations.

These measures have included enhanced surveillance and monitoring, strengthened access controls, additional security measures, review of alarms and response processes, overnight security where required, consultation with relevant authorities and specialists, and continued review of our security procedures.

No children or educators were present or harmed during those incidents.

For us, responsible leadership means learning from every experience and asking:

What else can we do to protect our children, our people and our community?

Emotional Safety Matters Too

A child can be physically protected and still not feel safe.

At Play to Learn, emotional safety is an important part of our educational philosophy.

Children need adults who are steady, responsive, attentive and able to recognise what behaviour may be communicating.

Through our everyday practice and our Empowered Children’s Program, educators support children to develop greater awareness of emotions, communicate their needs, build resilience and develop healthy ways of responding to challenges.

We aim to create environments where children know:

I can ask for help.

My feelings matter.

Adults will listen to me.

My body and boundaries are respected.

I deserve to be treated with kindness and respect.

There are trusted adults here to help me.

These messages contribute to children’s developing understanding of agency, relationships, boundaries and personal safety.

A Culture Where Children Have a Voice

Safeguarding children also means ensuring their voices matter.

We encourage children to communicate their ideas, preferences, feelings and concerns in ways appropriate to their age and development.

Educators build genuine relationships with children so they can recognise changes in behaviour, communication or emotional presentation and respond thoughtfully.

Children should never have to earn an adult’s respect.

They deserve to experience it from the beginning.

Clear Professional Expectations

Working with children is a privilege that carries significant responsibility.

Our team members are expected to understand and uphold Play to Learn’s professional expectations, Code of Conduct, child safety responsibilities and relevant regulatory requirements.

We expect our educators and leaders to demonstrate professionalism, appropriate boundaries, accountability and sound judgement in their interactions with children, families and one another.

Where something does not meet our expectations, we believe in addressing it.

A strong safety culture cannot exist where difficult conversations are avoided.

Leadership & Governance

Safety requires leadership.

As an Approved Provider with more than two decades of experience in early childhood education and care, Play to Learn maintains governance systems designed to support oversight, accountability and continuous improvement.

Our senior leaders work closely with Centre Directors and educators to review practices, identify risks, strengthen systems and ensure expectations are understood across our services.

We do not view compliance as the finish line.

Meeting regulatory requirements is essential, but our responsibility is to continually ask whether our systems, environments and practices can be stronger.

Transparency With Families

Families deserve clear and honest communication about matters affecting their children.

Transparency and accountability are core Play to Learn values.

When significant issues arise, our approach is to assess the situation carefully, take appropriate action, communicate responsibly and continue reviewing what can be learned or improved.

Trust is built not by claiming that challenges will never occur, but by demonstrating how responsibly we respond when they do.

Continually Learning. Continually Improving.

Safety is never “finished”.

Children change. Teams change. Environments change. Technology changes. Regulations change. Research changes.

Our responsibility is to keep learning.

We regularly review our systems, professional practices, environments and safety measures and use new information, incidents, observations, feedback and sector developments as opportunities for improvement.

When we identify something that can be strengthened, we act.

That is what accountability looks like to us.

Our Promise to Families

When you choose Play to Learn, you are trusting us with an extraordinary responsibility.

We do not take that trust lightly.

Our promise is to continue investing in our people, environments, systems, education and leadership so that safety remains embedded in how Play to Learn operates every day.

We will continue to listen.

We will continue to learn.

We will continue to question our practices.

We will continue to strengthen our systems.

And above all, we will continue advocating for environments where every child can feel:

Safe.
Known.
Valued.
Heard.
Respected.
Protected.

Because children who feel safe have the freedom to explore, connect, learn and reach their full potential.
